Thursdays in Black

As an international diaconal network, we support the Thursdays in Black campaign and its vision of a world free from rape and violence.

Violence and abuse remain a reality in every part of the world. They often happen behind closed doors, and many survivors remain silent because of fear, shame or the risk of further harm. We believe that every person deserves to live in safety, dignity and peace.

The campaign began through the World Council of Churches (WCC) and grew out of a global commitment to stand in solidarity with women and all people affected by violence. It was inspired by courageous individuals and movements around the world who spoke out against violence, injustice and oppression, often at great personal risk.

Ending violence is a shared responsibility. Together, we can challenge attitudes and behaviours that tolerate abuse, stand alongside survivors and help create communities where all people are respected and protected.

The idea behind the campaign is simple but powerful: wear black on Thursdays as a visible sign that you stand against violence and injustice. By taking part, we join a global movement that raises awareness, shows solidarity with survivors and calls for lasting change.

We warmly invite our member organisations, partners and friends to take part in the campaign and encourage others to join. Every Thursday is an opportunity to make a visible commitment to dignity, respect, justice and a world free from violence.
