About Us

DIAKONIA REGION AFRICA–EUROPE (DRAE) is one of three regional communities within the DIAKONIA World Federation, a global network of diaconal organisations and Christian communities committed to serving people in faith and solidarity.

Although formally established in 1994, our roots reach back to the late 1940s, when diaconal groups joined forces to respond to the social and human challenges in the aftermath of the Second World War. This spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility continues to shape our work today.

Today, DRAE brings together diaconal organisations from more than 20 countries across Africa and Europe, representing over 16.000 people dedicated to living out the Gospel through service. Based in Germany and registered as an association, our network is guided by an elected board and a constitution that expresses our shared values and commitments.

What we stand for

  • Spiritual encouragement — nurturing faith and strengthening commitment to service.
  • Empowerment for diaconal action — supporting the skills, leadership and vision of diaconal actors.
  • Advocacy for dignity and justice — standing up for human rights and social fairness.
  • Mutual exchange — connecting people and ideas across borders and cultures.

How we achieve this

We connect diaconal organisations, Christian communities and groups of diaconal workers across regions, creating spaces for encounter, learning and collaboration. Through this exchange, we grow together and strengthen the impact of diaconal engagement worldwide.

What we offer

  • Belonging to a global fellowship — experiencing solidarity within a worldwide diaconal network.
  • Diversity and mutual understanding — learning how diaconal work is lived in different contexts.
  • Encounters that inspire cooperation — regional and global gatherings that foster relationships and shared initiatives.
